I was recently asked, “If you create a vision board with all of these big goals and big visions, doesn’t that depress you?”
When I asked for further explanation, the response was, “Well if you put those big visions out there, look at them every day and then you don’t accomplish what you set out to accomplish, I think that would be depressing.”
She was right! You absolutely could feel that way…if you choose to have that response and you choose to look at it that way!
Or you can choose to look at it a different way and tell yourself, “Hey, if I don’t achieve that goal, if I never accomplish that vision, I’m no worse off than I am today! I currently haven’t achieved that goal, I don’t have it today, and so what’s the difference, I’m no worse off!”
And if I put the dream out there and allow my subconscious and conscious mind to work toward it, I should accomplish something toward it. I may not completely reach that pie in the sky dream but I bet I’m going to be better than I am today. Better than if I had stayed complacent. I know I’m always better off when I put myself into action.
And maybe I’ll discover along the way as I get into action that the vision I put out there is not even what I really want! Maybe I’ll discover something different. Maybe I’ll discover something better! But I’ll never know if I don’t try!
What good does it do me to avoid putting it out there? What good does it do me to ignore it? Because even if I don’t put it out there on a vision board or write it down on a piece of paper, I probably still think about or imagine those dreams at some point. Putting it down in black and white doesn’t mean that I’m a failure if I don’t achieve it. It doesn’t mean that I have to achieve it. But putting it down gives me something to focus on and aim for.
In sorority our symbol was the crescent moon so we would often say, “Shoot for the moon and you'll land on the stars.” Guess what? I’m okay landing on the stars, even if I never get to the moon! Because the stars are better than where I’m standing today!
Allow yourself the freedom to know that you’ll be no worse off than you are today. It’s okay if you don’t get all the way there, you’ll have accomplished even a little something! Now get into action and put your gargantuan goals, your vast visions and your dynamite dreams out there for you and the world to see!
